Amsterdam is one of my favorite coffee destinations in Europe. The city has no shortage of excellent specialty coffee shops, and there's bound to be something good nearby, no matter what neighborhood you're in.
Some have expertly roasted beans, others have cozy interiors that make you want to linger for an extra hour, and a few make coffee so good it's worth going out of your way for.
Whether you're looking for a serious specialty coffee shop, a quiet place to work, or the perfect iced coffee on a warm day, these are my favorite coffee spots in Amsterdam.
Bocca
If you're serious about coffee, start with Bocca.
This is one of Amsterdam's best-known specialty coffee roasters, and for good reason. Not only do they roast their own beans, but they also work directly with coffee producers, giving them control over the entire process from sourcing to roasting.
The result is consistently excellent coffee.
Every cup I've had here has been beautifully balanced: rich enough to satisfy coffee lovers without ever feeling bitter or overpowering. Bocca became one of my favorite places for slow mornings. The only downside is that seating can be a little tight, especially during busy hours. If you can grab a table, though, it's absolutely worth it.

Back to Black
If you're looking for a quieter side of Amsterdam, Back to Black is one of my favorite places to escape the crowds.
Just outside the busy Leidseplein area, this cozy neighborhood café has a distinctly local feel. You'll usually find people reading books, working on laptops, or chatting quietly over coffee while looking out toward the canal.
It's also dog friendly, which meant Bindi was always welcome, although the resident cat usually disappeared the moment she arrived.

Bruno's Amsterdam
If you're looking for a super strong espresso, this is the place to go. Bruno's coffee will instantly wake you up!
Their shop is a no-frills kind of place that reminds me a bit of the Italian coffee bars where you quickly run in, down your espresso and then get on with your day.
But the coffee is certainly not an afterthought; every aspect of their brews is thoughtfully produced. They also have workshops if you want to get really into the details and learn how to make excellent coffee yourself!
Wakuli
I was so glad when Wakuli opened in my neighborhood. In fact, I like their coffee so much that I still order their beans even though I'm living in France now.
While they make excellent hot coffee, the real standout here is their nitro cold brew and nitro latte. Infusing the coffee with nitrogen creates an incredibly creamy texture without adding dairy; on a hot summer afternoon, it's hard to beat.
I also like to support Wakuli because of their commitment to paying coffee farmers more than the industry average while focusing on sustainability throughout their supply chain.
It's great coffee that also supports a better way of producing it.

Café Maha
Most people discover Café Maha because of its beautiful interior, or because they were exploring the nearby Maha clothing boutique, and their coffee shop is just as trendy as their store. They've put as much thought into the atmosphere as they have into their drinks. The coffee is smooth, rich, and consistently well prepared.
It's also one of those places that simply feels nice to spend time in. Between the thoughtful design, carefully curated home décor, and excellent pastries, it's an easy place to lose an hour before heading back out to explore Amsterdam.

Local's Coffee
Local's is a great grab-and-go spot in De Pijp neighborhood.
Whenever I'm nearby, I can't resist stopping in here for a flat white. It's always perfectly made, the service is quick and friendly, and they always have some tempting-looking sweet treats on display as well.
If you're looking for a larger breakfast, their brunch spot just around the corner is also very good, but be warned, it can get very busy on the weekends.
Kafenion
If you know me, you know I love Greek coffee, and Amsterdam is so lucky to have Kafenion, a Greek coffee shop, in town.
If you're craving a freddo cappuccino, or just regular coffee, it's hard to go wrong here. What makes this place even better is that they usually have bougatsa available as well. If you've never tried it before, it's the most delicious Greek pastry, something I would happily hop on a flight to Greece for at any moment.
Final Thoughts
Amsterdam's coffee scene is one of the best in Europe, with everything from world-class specialty roasters to cozy neighborhood cafés.
If you're only visiting for a few days, I'd make Bocca my first stop for classic specialty coffee, Local's for something on-the-go, and Wakuli if you're visiting during the summer and craving an excellent iced coffee.
These are the coffees I kept returning for while living in Amsterdam, and the ones I still make time for whenever I'm back in the city.
